NATUROPATHIC LICENSURE

Following graduation, Naturopathic Doctors sit for their national board exams, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Exam (NPLEX). Testing consists of 4 days of rigorous examination to assess and substantiate the individual’s knowledge of their Naturopathic Education. These exams must be passed to meet licensing requirements as a Naturopathic Doctor.

There are currently 15 states in which Naturopathic Doctors are licensed as primary care physicians. In these states, licensed NDs may diagnose and treat medical conditions, perform physical exams and order lab testing. Licensed NDs must meet state-mandated continuing education requirements annually and abide by the scope of practice authorized by state law. In unlicensed states, like Colorado, Naturopathic Doctors are unable to provide all of the Alternative Medicine Therapies in which they are trained, however, they are permitted to see patients and make recommendations based on prior diagnoses. Colorado NDs are actively pursuing licensure. In unlicensed states patients are asked to maintain a primary care physician (MD or DO) in addition to seeing a Naturopathic Doctor. NDs are trained in integrative medicine and work extensively with other practitioners and physicians to ensure the best possible care, as well as refer to specialists when appropriate.
