FIVE TIPS FOR INTEGRATING NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE INTO YOUR CANCER CARE REGIME

Find a Qualified Naturopathic Doctor – Find a practitioner with a doctorate degree, who graduated from a four year, accredited, graduate level medical school. Some naturopaths are self-taught, so make sure you choose a skilled, licensed Naturopathic Doctor with formal training in Alternative Medicine.

Do Not Self-Prescribe – Just because a substance is “natural” does not mean it is safe. You should only use supplements, herbs, vitamins, under the care of a qualified Naturopathic Doctor or another medical professional.

Be Aware of Potential Drug Interactions – There are endless numbers of vitamins, minerals, nutrients and herbs that have a biochemical effect on your body. Some supplements interact or interfere with conventional cancer treatments and medications, and some are contraindicated with certain types of cancer. Naturopathic Doctors can monitor your care to prevent unwanted nutrient-drug interactions.

Coordinate Your Treatment with Your Healthcare Practitioners – Communicate with all of your healthcare providers about the treatments and therapies you are receiving. If you are seeing a Naturopathic Doctor make sure your Oncologist knows and vice-versa. If both your Medical Doctor and Naturopathic Doctor are willing to converse about their respective therapies with one another you will receive a more integrative approach to your cancer care.

Insist on Individualized Care – We are all individuals who respond differently to cancer and the treatment of cancer. Not everything works for everyone. Your Naturopathic Doctor should customize your therapies based on your individual needs and desires, making you the focal point around which your treatment plan is established.
